The lyrics of Tim Lopez of Plain White Ts song, The Giving Tree, hits home for many who have been in a relationship and gave them there all without receiving it back. The song relates to many people in relationships or even friendships. The relation to the song can range from a variety of ages and sexes. Someone can only put so much into a relationship with receiving little to nothing back, until they finally break down and walk away. Tim Lopez was inspired by a childrens book by Shel Silverstein, The Giving Tree, which was about a relationship between a boy and a tree. Tim Lopez wrote this song about his one-way relationship where he gave it his all with little to nothing in return. Friendships can have a magnificent beginning, but theres always a chance that you will drift apart. Friends occasionally look to make themselves happy instead of simply enjoying each others friendship. Real friends will be there for you through thick and thin, and even when you dont need them The song itself can be interpreted in many different ways and situations. For instance, the song could be towards a friendship or relationship. Where someone puts so much into that friendship or relationship and gets little to nothing back in return. It happens to people of all ages, girls or boys, givers or taker, they end up all suffering a great deal of pain. Some become so indulged in finding love; they forget that their uncertainness can lead to the pain of others. The music video starts with two young children, playing and potentially falling in love. Everything going great between them, when suddenly uncertainties of some sort about their relationship, guides the girl to take advantage of the boy. The boy gives more than he receives and wonders where he went so wrong. The girl is with another guy, but feels a sort of emptiness. She crawls back to the boy, while he hopes she will realize how much he loves her. He just wants to be her giving tree and make her happy. He becomes the sad and lonely fool that is left with nothing, but a broken heart.
